One chain, every round

This block assumes you already know these positions. We are not learning them from scratch. We are putting them together and sharpening them, in live rounds, with one chain that stays the same for the whole block.

Why a chain? If you only play retention, your partner never gives you their legs. If you only play inside guards, you skip the fight to get there. The chain makes you work every stage in order: pull, retain, connect, go lower, get inside, sweep, pass, control. Then do it again.

First goal: land the whole chain consistently. One technique per link is fine. Variety comes later.

Who this stream is for
To be in the Gi stream you train at least 3 to 4 Gi sessions a week. At four sessions a week you realistically pick one stream, Gi or NoGi. You can't split your time between both at this intensity.

The round

Every live round runs this loop. Stay on it the whole time. Things will go off script because your partner is resisting. When they do, find the link you are in and carry on from there.

One round, start to finish

  1. LoopUpper and lower body swap both ways. Lower body shut down? Go back up and work down again.
  2. Slow pullFoot on the hip or pull to DLR / closed guard. Skips 2 and 3 and lands you straight in 4.
ConstantThe guard chain stays the same all block. Only the passing phase changes, every 2 to 3 weeks.

Round rules

In and out this block

In

  • Fast pull (main start) or slow pull (straight to lower body).
  • Any technique inside each link. Spider or lasso, DLR or K-guard: your choice. Your partner won't always give you the same one, so have a second option when you can.
  • Closed guard counts as a lower body guard.
  • Sweep from the inside positions. Sweep threats earlier in the chain are there to move you down the chain.
  • On top: pass with the current phase, control about 30 seconds, fall over, go again.

Out, or not recommended

  • No takedowns yet. Start every round with a pull. Takedowns come in a later block.
  • No grips in the first 30 seconds. Retention first: no guards, no controls.
  • Half guard is allowed but not recommended. In the Gi it is hard to get from half guard to inside positions like SLX or X-guard.

Passing phases

Passing works by combining threats. Each phase pairs two families. Threaten one; when they defend it, the defence opens the other. The phase changes every 2 to 3 weeks. The guard chain does not.

Three families, three phases

P1 wk 1-3 NOW P2 wk 4-6 P3 wk 7-8 Under Outside Through
IdeaEach side of the triangle is a phase. You pass by moving along it: one family's threat opens the other.
Phase 1wk 1-3 · 28/09 to 18/10
Under + Outside
Current phase

Go under and stack. When they push you away and extend their legs to stop it, the legs are out to the side: go around. When they turn in to chase the outside pass, their legs come back in range: go under again.

Phase 2wk 4-6 · 19/10 to 8/11
Under + Through
Next

Threaten the stack. When they bring their hips down and frame to stop it, step through: knee cut, smash, surfer. When they block the cut with a knee shield, their legs are up: go back under.

Phase 3wk 7-8 · 9/11 to 22/11
Outside + Through
Last

Move around the legs. When they turn to face you, the turn opens the knee line: cut through. When they square up to block the cut, go around again.

Pulls: fast and slow

Two kinds of guard pull, and they lead to different places in the chain.

Fast pull
leads to 2 Retention → 3 Upper body

The modern pull. Grab any grip and sit straight down. There is no real connection yet, but you are on the floor first, ready for the double-pull exchange. This is the main start for the round.

Slow pull
leads to 4 Lower body

The classic pull. Foot on the hip and pull to closed guard, both feet on the hips, or pull straight to DLR. You skip retention and upper body and land in the lower body guards.

Takedowns

Not in this block's rounds. Here so you know what's coming and can start watching.

Coming in a later block
Single leg
leads to Passing

A good single leg is an absolute requirement for everyone in the stream.

Coming in a later block
One more takedown of your choice
leads to Passing

Collar drag, double leg, a judo throw, whatever suits you. We start with two takedowns; ideally you end up with three. Plus a sprawl for takedown defence.
